Lake Como holds 146 square kilometres of glacial water between limestone walls that rise 600 metres in some places. The Y-shaped basin formed during the Würm glaciation roughly 10,000 years ago, leaving steep shores that made overland travel difficult for centuries.
By the Roman period, wealthy families were already building villas along the water, and by the 18th century, European aristocracy had claimed the shoreline as a summer retreat. Villa Balbianello, completed in 1787 on a wooded promontory near Lenno, became a cardinal's residence before passing into private hands. Villa Carlotta, finished in 1690, housed Prussian royalty and now opens its terraced botanical gardens to the public. Villa d'Este, a 16th-century cardinal's palace in Cernobbio, converted to a luxury hotel in 1873 and has hosted heads of state ever since.
The lake's three branches — Como in the southwest, Lecco in the southeast, and Colico at the northern tip — each carry distinct microclimates. The Como branch enjoys the mildest winters, supporting Mediterranean cypresses and olive groves at latitudes where snow typically dominates. Bellagio, the peninsula town where the southwest and southeast arms meet, became a silk-weaving center in the 15th century and retains cobbled salite that climb 200 vertical metres from the waterfront. Varenna, across the water, built its defensive tower in the 11th century and still shows the stone boat landings used by medieval merchants.
Lake Como boat tour private charters operate year-round, though spring and early autumn offer the calmest conditions. The traditional Venetian-style launches — handcrafted mahogany hulls with varnished decks — remain the preferred vessel for villa tours. These wooden boats, some dating to the 1950s, seat six to eight passengers and draw less than a metre of water, allowing close approaches to private docks and grottoes. Modern fiberglass speedboats handle rougher water but lack the period detail. Most private tours depart from Como, Bellagio, or Varenna and range from two-hour villa circuits to full-day excursions that include lunch stops in Tremezzo or crossings into Swiss waters near Lugano. The lake's 170-kilometre shoreline holds more than 50 historic villas, though only a fraction open for public visits. A private boat tour circumvents road access limitations and reaches estates invisible from land, including Villa Cassinella and Villa Fontanelle, both used for film locations.
